Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious autoimmune disease that causes the skin to become inflamed, scaly, and itchy:
  • Symptoms
Psoriasis causes red, pink, or purple patches of skin that are dry and scaly. The patches can appear anywhere on the body, but most often appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, or lower back. The severity of psoriasis can vary from small patches to covering the entire body.
  • Causes
Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system that causes skin cells to multiply too quickly. The exact cause is unknown, but it's likely a combination of genetics and environmental factors. Family history and smoking can increase the risk of developing psoriasis.
  • Treatment
There's no cure for psoriasis, but treatments can help improve symptoms. Treatments include creams, ointments, pills, injections, and light treatments. Managing triggers like stress and skin injuries can also help.
  • Prognosis
Psoriasis can be a lifelong condition that can come and go. With proper treatment, it won't affect your overall health. However, there's a link between psoriasis and other health problems, such as heart disease.
