Home Disease Eczema

Eczema
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes dry, itchy skin and rashes:
  • Symptoms
Eczema can cause the skin to become red, swollen, cracked, and scaly. It can also make the skin weep clear fluid or crust. The rash can appear in different places depending on the age of the person, such as the face, behind the knees, or on the hands and feet.
  • Causes
The cause of eczema is unknown, but it's likely caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
  • Treatment
There's no cure for eczema, but treatments can help manage symptoms. Treatments include creams, ointments, light therapy, and medicines. You can also try home remedies like:
    • Moisturizing your skin at least twice a day
    • Taking an oral antihistamine
    • Avoiding scratching the skin
    • Using a humidifier
    • Wearing cool, smooth-textured clothing
  • Prevention
You can try to prevent eczema flares by:
    • Avoiding things that irritate your skin, like certain soaps, fabrics, and lotions
    • Avoiding stress
    • Limiting hot showers to about 10 minutes
    • Using a gentle, nonsoap cleanser
    • Patting your skin dry instead of scrubbing it
